Treads,
Black and Ethnic Minority Youth group in Blandford
Dec
2003 – May 2004
The
Workshop:
Tutors
in the fields of Film making, Graphic Design and Arts & Events
were brought in to teach and mentor a group of Black & Ethnic
Minority young people at ‘Treads’ youth club in Blandford. To
give the young people an opportunity to meet with professional
people and use up-to-date equipment they might not normally have
access to. Projects the young people were involved in were designing
and producing a poster, making a film and techniques in breakdancing.
Benefits:
The
tutors had the chance to work with a different group of young
people and the everyday issues they face, such as language differences
and cultural customs.
An
Arts and Events student participated in teaching sessions with
the group about how to create a project. This proved valuable
teaching experience for her as she felt she would like to continue
to teach.
The
young people met new people and learnt new skills.
Awareness
of Higher Education and the likelihood of participants taking
up Higher Education.
Students
get to work as a group and interact with people of all ages.
Develop
artistic and creative skills.
Gives
students a sense of achievement and responsibility.
Outcomes:
Two
students designed and produced a poster to recruit a football
team manager for their local team. This proved a success as they
organised an all-day football tournament for under 16’s in the
Dorset area and came 3rd .
A
group of five students worked on making three short films, this
included acting, filming, learning how to use the equipment and
digital editing. They learnt cinematic and camera techniques,
storyboarding and working as a team.
One
student developed his techniques of breakdancing. He entered the
‘Into Youth Club’ talent contest at Sturminster Newton with the
group he teaches and won 1st place. He is shortly starting a college
course in dance at Bournemouth & Poole College, to continue
doing what he loves.
We
took the opportunity of working with these young people to interview
them for The Streetwise Guide to your Future Website as case studies.
www.streetwise-guide.com
A
DVD of all the work was created and distributed to all involved.
All
the young people gained many new experiences, learnt new skills
and art activities and had the chance to work with industry professionals.
