Introduction to the Monitoring, Evaluation and Targeting team

Monitoring, evaluation and tracking are central to the Aimhigher in LIFE partnership. This process is ongoing, continuously reviewed and developed. It is assisting in the development of a targeting strategy in accordance with the 2007 HEFCE targeting guidance. The main functions of the team are to:

1. Monitor and evaluate activities within each strand in order to assess their impact, outcomes and effectiveness in order to feedback into the planning process in the short, medium and long term.

Short term monitoring and evaluation is concerned with measuring such things as:

  • Increased positive attitudes and aspirations from the beginning of an event/activity to the end of the activity;
  • Increased awareness of higher education;
  • Identifying key influences.

Medium term monitoring and evaluation is concerned with measuring such things as:

  • Contribution to improvements in attainment at levels 2 and 3;
  • Attainments by schools (e.g. GCSE results);
  • Participation at level 3.

Long term monitoring and evaluation is concerned with measuring such things as:

  • Higher education applications;
  • Higher education enrolments.

Medium and long term impacts are measured through the tracking study being undertaken across the LIFE partnership through the Connexions service.

2. To develop a targeting strategy in line with HEFCE guidance. The team is supporting strands and schools in identifying the Aimhigher target cohort. The LIFE area is piloting the LIFE Ladder which will develop a progressive set of activities from year 9 up to and including year 13 and FE college progression for those identified target students in a sample of schools.
