Short Term Evaluation

Short term evaluation is conducted through event evaluations within the Schools, Colleges and Community, Creative Industries and Engineering strands. All students complete a one page consent form and a two page event evaluation form (with the exception being a short intervention, such as a 30 minute talk, where students only complete the consent form).

It is through this evaluation we can answer questions such as:

  • Did the students enjoy the activity?
  • What have they leant from the activity?
  • Was there anything that they didn’t enjoy?
  • Has it raised students awareness of higher education/ university?
  • What might influence a students decision to go to university?
  • Has the activity raised students aspirations to go to university?

Data is produced and aggregated using a three layered approach:

1. Generic data for the LIFE partnership
2. Data by strand
3. Data by individual event

By producing data using this three layered approach we can answer a whole variety of questions such as:

  • Do particular events appear to raise aspirations more than others?
  • Does gender have a role to play in aspiration raising?
  • Do students in one strand enjoy the activities at a notably higher rate than others?
  • Do barriers to higher education vary between different year groups?
  • Is there a link between the length of the activity and enjoyment levels?

Critical to the success of this evaluation process is the engagement of staff and student ambassadors. It is these groups of people who attend events and can positively influence both the quality and quantity of data that the monitoring and evaluation team receives. Effective short-term evaluation is critical to the whole evaluation process. If questionnaires are not completed, for example, this will have an adverse effect on the long term tracking study.
