About the Project:
Ucan 2 is a National AchieveAbility project focussing on specific learning difficulties e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia as part of the South West Aimhigher network
Ucan2 Work :
Build on the work undertaken via the AchieveAbility project as follows:
- Deliver taster sessions to 80 disabled students (Year 9 +)
- Deliver 1 event to parents
- Deliver 1 event to teachers
- Dissemination work e.g. produce a website/publications
What has been achieved so far:
- Delivered taster sessions to 102 ALN students (exceeded target)
- Delivered events to 23 parents (exceeded target)
- Delivered events to 18 teachers (exceeded target)

Biographys of Staff:
Dr James M Palfreman-Kay, Manager Additional Learning Needs Service (ALNS)
Dr Palfreman-Kay is responsible for managing the Additional Learning Needs Service, which provides academic support to disabled students enrolled on Bournemouth University programmes. Through James’s work at BU he has become involved in a number of disability outreach projects which aim to raise awareness, throughout schools and colleges in the LIFE area, of support available to disabled students who are considering studying a post-16 education programme.
He is also Chair of the National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP) which represents the views of disability practitioners working within post-16 education. Through this role James has worked with key organisations such as the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) to promote the views of its members.
Jane Clarke, Dyslexia Tutor, Additional Learning Needs Service (ALNS)
Jane Clarke is a Dyslexia Tutor who has been providing support to students with specific learning difficulties for a number of years at Bournemouth University. She has also been working with Dr Palfreman-Kay for the last two years to support the disability outreach work that has been undertaken at the University.
Currently, Jane is undertaking the postgraduate certificate in mathematics support for students with dyslexia and dyscalculia in post-16 education.
