The workshops were supported by 6 student mentors who are currently studying for performing arts qualifications in higher and further education, and a futher 9 residential mentors supervising the outside of the taught programme.

There was a lively and varied social programme in the evenings for participants to chill-out, get to know each other and have some fun. Student mentors were always on hand throughout the Summer School to assist tutors, to look after the pastoral care of the participants and offer advice on studying at FE and HE levels.

The Summer School introduces the creative and technical aspects of performing arts disciplines to young people who are interested in and enthusiastic about meeting new challenges. In addition to this, it encourages participants to think about learning paths in Further and Higher Education in their specific area of interest.

On the final day, participants, mentors and tutors shared the stage at the Lighthouse in a celebratory performance which proved a big success with all who participated and came to the event.  All participants were also awarded certificates to commemorate the event.

Residential Summer School

8th - 13th August 2004

The Activity:

Thirty-two 16 year-old students from the South West took part in The Arts Institute residential Summer School.

Students were chosen under specific criteria, mainly having no prior parental experience of higher education but with an ability to progress if desired. All summer school places were administered under The University of Exeter as part of the Hefce Summer School programme. As part of this programme a peer review scheme was set up where all institutions that ran summer schools visited each other.

All students upon arrival received a welcome pack that included basic drawing materials that they could use during their stay. T-shirts for all students, mentors and tutors were supplied which worked well as students were easily distinguished when off campus.

Week long workshops were held in the following subjects: Animation, Costume/Textiles, Multimedia and Photography. All students had made their subject choices prior to arrival.

Benefits:

Mentors and overnight mentors were employed to be with the students throughout the week. AIB graduates and current under-graduates were used as it was felt the summer school students would be able to ask questions about university life and find out what it is really like to be a student at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth. All mentors were close in age to the students, which was felt to be very beneficial.

All students plus four overnight mentors stayed in the AIB Halls of Residence.

A common room space was made and a  ‘Big Brother’ style diary room called ‘Big Momma’ was set up where students were able to air their views.  Playstation rooms, an internet café and various other games were also set up within this space.

Evening activities included icebreaker games and ground rules on the first evening, bowling, crazy golf, a film night, a visit to the Maize Maze at Christchurch, a beach barbeque at Branksome Dene Chine and  ‘Go ape’ a tree top outwards bounds course at Moors Valley Country Park. This was an excellent team building exercise as all students worked together, helping and encouraging their peers.

Towards the end of the week all students attended a careers session with Jane Evans, where careers with relevant pathways in art, design and media were discussed.

An awards ceremony was also held on their last morning where all completed work was showcased and prizes were given.

Outcomes:

All students completed questionnaires before leaving AIB and the results were very encouraging and positive. Many students’ perception of Higher Education and university life had been changed and would now consider applying to The Arts Institute and other HE institutions.

Two students have already enrolled onto ND courses at AIB to start in September ’04 with another one currently applying to enroll onto ND Design.
